Zumo is VERY, versatile and great but does not have stereo bluetooth. Gold standard of motorcycle GPS units. I've never been very successful with wiring and hooking directly to the battery at first seemed the simplest approach. But I understand now the pitfalls. Originally Posted by oldgoldie View Post.

I can see the connivance factor of having a hard wired but you can always do voice commands through a bluetooth motorcycle head unit in your helmet. Obviously requires a smartphone though which are expensive I ended up hard-wiring mine directly to the battery instead of the headlight parking light for several reasons.
First, the Garmin Zumo 4-wire harness is really long at least 6-ft. Yet the positive and negative wires were only about a few inches long before fusing together in the 4-wire harness -- too short to go from a Triumph key-off fuse in the fuse box to a battery lead. The unit comes with an inline 2-A fuse. I ran the harness along along the frame under the tank, fastened it securely with plastic pull-ties.
Even then, I had to coil up the excess length of the harness and stored it in the battery box. I crimped and heat shrunk ring connectors, covered the connectors with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion, and hooked up the battery leads.
I was not concerned about running down the battery. The unit comes with a super-easy-to-operate quick-release mechanism for the GPS. Once the GPS is removed, there is a cover that can be put on the exposed cradle to cover connectors see photo.
