The firm had borne his name alone in directory entries since , although the concertinas continued to be labelled C. Certainly, Chidley was living at 29, Conduit Street, close to the Wheatstone shop, by April , as he was enumerated there for the Census. In all, I would suggest that is perhaps a more likely date for his acquisition of C. Moreover, other models of treble, as well as all the tenors, baritones, and basses, were still being made by hand though using reeds supplied by Lachenal, except for the basses, which used French harmonium reeds.

In addition, though there are potentially more than 9, Red Book entries during this period allowing for a missing volume, between April and January , not all of them would have been for sales of new concertinas, as numerous entries in the surviving ledgers are for instruments that were lent, hired, or sold second hand, sometimes several times. A photostat catalogue of the collection was privately published: All further references to CMC numbers are to instruments from that catalogue.

An example of this is the receipt for a key Anglo, , sold on 26th Sept. Steve Dickinson, the present owner of C. An example of that technology is the pattern-following router, for cutting the tapered, dovetailed slots for the reed frames in the pan board, which is still in use by Steve Dickinson. Concert in a Factory , filmed on 3rd April Not surprisingly, under the circumstances, the router can cut slots in six, eight, or twelve-sided pans. The Wheatstone model number 51 denoted a key Anglo with mahogany ends; a key rosewood-ended Wheatstone should have been described as a model 55B.

Very few Accordeaphones were made, but a rare example, made for a player named Sid Ive and now owned by Chris Timson and Anne Gregson, can be seen online: Stephen Chambers is a leading authority on the history of the concertina and a collector of early free reed instruments; he has worked as a music librarian in London and was for many years proprietor of the venerable John McNeill music store est. He has recently moved to Kilrush, Co. Clare, where he intends to set up a concertina and squeezebox museum with his collection, and to start manufacturing concertinas.

A photostat catalogue of the collection was privately published: Try to get a button though, as a button would be very limiting musically, as you would have only the C and G rows, and no accidentals besides the F of the G scale. All further references to CMC numbers are to instruments from that catalogue. It is my intention to use a picture of the infernal machine as my 'signature' picture when I get my act together Sure, it is tough to estimate the year of manufacture of Lachenals, but we do the best we can.

It's only a "student" model, with brass reeds sharp of concert pitch, but plays nicely. Interestingly it still has both its' cloth baffles, with the serial number stamped on in ink and an undamaged label. Would it be too cheeky to ask if you would please roughly date my own instrument in which I have just discovered the Serial Number stamped on the reed board. Thanks and Best Wishes. Good luck with your Database and Lachenal article which will generate much grateful interest I'm sure. I am guessing that, in additon to metal fretwork, it has bone buttons, steel reeds, and 6-fold bellows--the same as key No.

You are quite correct about bone buttons, steel reeds, and 6 fold bellows although I think the present plain bellows are replacements. No labels though, long since gone I'm afraid. I would be grateful if you could give me a date for my English concertina; key, raised metal ends and brass reeds. It has the number stamped into the left metal end and Lachenal on the right side. I have a receipt for No , dated 5 Feb , but am sure the it is for a second-hand Lachenal English. So the closest receipt that I have is 11 April for No Therefore, I date your No at circa You need to be a member in order to leave a comment.
